"This was supposed to be our year" - Never Again Is Too Late

I spoke to one of my mentors earlier and she said something I've heard many times lately. We were discussing some of the current challenges and she said “and this was supposed to be our year, the year of the nurse.”

Timothy I too have been excited about the WHO’s designation of 2020 being “The Year of Nurse and Midwife”, but have begun to believe that Covid 19, has done what all the advertising in the world could not; it has underscored the crucial role that nurses take in global health. We stand as designated “heroes”, fighting an insidious enemy. We are working against incredible odds and with variable access to the equipment we need to do it. We now have the attention of the whole world, what do we want them to see? best, C. Cole-Ingber

Hi Timothy:

I understand that it looks different from a nurse's perspective, but from the rest of the world, you definitely are heroes. You always were heroes to people who needed you -- patients and their families. The difference is the whole world sees it now. We know we couldn't get through this without you.

Hi Cindy, thank you very much for your response. This climate has certainly grabbed the attention of the world, and we are now seeing things in a new light. There are opportunities now to make some progress in a host of areas. As a society we can take advantage of this challenge and work to really change healthcare and public health, to better meet the needs of our most vulnerable. It would be great if the nursing profession could be engaged and involved in more innovative ways. Again, thank you for your kind words it means a lot, and we all have to do our part to help each other to get past this crisis and emerge happy and healthier in the other side.

Tim
