Challenges of COVID

Submission to my Elementary School Newsletter this week:

Hello dear Jessup Families: Dr. Leiseth has asked me to write but during this very sad and uncertain pandemic and infodemic, I’m searching to provide something meaningful and heartfelt. All our lives have drastically and, I feel, forever changed. This crisis has magnified so many issues that need attention however remembering the faces and personalities of your children has provided much comfort as we all navigate through and out of this tragedy.
Public health is my first passion but a critical and perfect complement to school nursing. Recalling the times I explained or made your child wash their hands properly, cough or sneeze with manners and consideration of others or admonishing them not to touch their T-zone is the cornerstone of a healthy school. It’s simple. It’s basic. We now know it is life-saving.
I hope you are explaining to your child what is going on so that they can do their part to take this situation very seriously. Children have a primal need to better grasp and understand the world around them and you have the uncanny, natural ability to know when you have said just enough for their appropriate age and cognition. I shared the video below with staff and now with you. Ask your child to imagine Nurse Wright sharing this news just to them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhQzI3WWUto&feature=youtu.be Teaching for Better Humans, is a Ted Talk that gives due, deep credit to teachers of all kinds. It also is a talk on how to teach kids to cope. They cover the basic competencies for students in a digital world. To be inclusive, informed, engaged, balanced and alert so we can all make our communities a better place. This hour will allow you as a parent or guardian to reflect and find creativity, calm and even opportunities in unexpected ways and places. https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510298/ted-radio-hour I’ll leave you with a link to a thoughtful article and resources from "Ways to Promote Children's Resilience to the COVID-19 Pandemic:” https://www.childtrends.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/COVIDProtectiveFactors_ChildTrends_April2020.pdf During this week where universal faiths celebrate renewal of the heart, spirit, body, and world, I hope these resources are small gifts to you. Those of us left standing will get through this. Sadly today we have lost almost 14,000 Americans. Know that every one of you are missed and thought of continually during this anxious and isolated time. I’m available by email M, W, F 8-4 pm or T, TH 8-noon. You can reach me at Teresa.wright@laramie1.org and I will respond promptly.
